# UI vs API

> Choose the Documate app, the partner API, or both.

## Use the app when you need to

* Design agents and schemas
* Map document types on a channel
* Manually upload and review results
* Configure webhooks and API keys

## Use the partner API when you need to

* Upload files from your ERP or middleware
* Poll file and document status
* Run sync extract for a single document in one request
* Download content programmatically

## Typical pattern

1. Configure agents and channels in the app.
2. Create an API key.
3. Upload asynchronously and receive [webhooks](/guides/webhooks), or poll until Ready.
4. Read `resultJson` on the document (or webhook `data`) into your system of record.
