# Agents

> Create and configure extraction agents in the Documate app.

Agents define how Documate extracts structured data from a document type.

## Create an agent

1. Open **Agents**.
2. Choose a template that matches your document type, or create a blank agent.
3. Edit instructions and the output schema so fields match what your business needs.
4. Save.

## Test an agent

Use the agent **Test** action to upload a sample file against that agent. Confirm the document becomes Ready and the extracted fields look correct.

## Connect the agent to a channel

On **Channels**, map each document type to the agent that should process it. Without a route, uploads of that type cannot run through the agent.

  Keep one agent per document type on a channel unless you intentionally change routing.
