# Concepts

> Core Documate terms: business, channel, file, document, and agent.

Learn the building blocks you will see in the Documate app and partner API.

## Business

A **business** is your workspace boundary in Documate. Uploads, agents, channels, API keys, and results belong to the active business.

## Channel

A **channel** is the intake path for files inside a business. Each channel has an ID used by the partner API as `queueId`.

In the app you configure routing (document type → agent), email intake, and webhook settings on the channel.

## File

A **file** is one uploaded binary (PDF, image, and so on). Documate may split a file into one or more logical documents.

## Document

A **document** is one logical business document produced from a file (for example one invoice). Extracted results and outbound webhooks are scoped to the document.

## Agent

An **agent** defines how a document type is extracted: instructions, output schema, and optional post-processing. You map document types to agents on a channel.

## Statuses

Common file statuses: `received`, `processing`, `ready`, `partial_ready`, `failed`, `rejected`, `cancelled`.

Common document statuses: `received`, `processing`, `ready`, `failed`, `rejected`, `cancelled`.

When a document is `ready`, its extracted result is available in the app and via the API.
