# Authentication

> Authenticate partner API requests with an API key.

## Create a key

In the Documate app, open **API keys**, create a key, and copy it once. See [API keys](/guides/api-keys).

## Headers

Preferred:

```bash theme={null}
X-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY
```

Also accepted:

```bash theme={null}
Authorization: ApiKey YOUR_API_KEY
```

## Playground

On any API reference page, paste your key into the authentication field labeled `X-Api-Key` before sending a request.

  Never share keys in tickets, screenshots, or public repos. Revoke compromised keys immediately.
